old goa church

old goa church

The name Old Goa was first used in the 1960s in the address of the Konkani monthly magazine, dedicated to spread the devotion of the Sacred Heart, Dor Mhoineachi Rotti which was shifted to the Basilica of Bom Jesus in 1964. Postal letters were returned to the sender, as the name "Old Goa" was unknown then, according to then and long-time editor of the monthly, the great Goan historian late Padre Moreno de Souza, SJ.

This is the only church in Old Goa, which is not plastered on the outside, the lime plaster having been stripped off by a zealous Portuguese conservationist in 1950.

This magnificent edifice stands as a superb example of Baroque architecture in Goa. The church is called "Bom Jesus" meaning 'good Jesus' or 'infant Jesus' to whom it is dedicated. The façade has on it, at the top, the letters, "HIS" which are the first three letters of Jesus in Greek.

Goa Carnival Carnaval 'Carne''Vale'

Carnival in Goa is a non-stop 3-day festival Held in mid February is exclusive and unique to Goa which was introduced by the Portuguese with lively processions ,dances and much more.it has managed to get attracts thousands of people from all over the world.

The origins and nature of the carnival can be traced to the hedonistic feasts of ancient Rome and Greece. These carivals started in the Spanish and Portugese colonies, and gradually became known for their singing, dancing and drinking.

The carnival is presided over by King Momo, who on the opening day orders his subjects to party. Hotel bookings must be done in advance for carnival as the festival attracts thousands of tourists.

The word Carnival (Carnaval in Portuguese) is derived from a Latin word meaning ‘to take away meat’ Latin 'Carne', meaning meat, and 'Vale', which translates to 'good-bye',Sometimes also link to 'Carnislevamen' or 'the pleasures of meat'.Another hypothesis suggests that the word came from 'Carrus Navalis', the horse-drawn, boat-shaped carriage that was paraded during the Roman festival Saturnalia, in honor of Saturn. It carried men and women in fancy dresses, wearing masks, and singing obscene songs. It is possible that the present-day concept of a carnival emerged from this parade.

Carnival is one of the most colorful and popular festival of Goa,Goa Carnival is festival that is dominated by enjoyment and merry making where people come together and spread cheer and happiness.

Portuguese Nationality for goan origin

On 18th December 1961, the Indian Army invaded Portuguese India and the Portuguese forces in the territories commanded by Governor General Vassalo e Silva surrendered, violating strict orders from Salazar to resist until the last man. Salazar wanted Portuguese Indians to feel that Portugal did not abandoned them and provided laws to keep them as Portuguese Citizens. Many Goans left Goa at that time and were welcomed in Portugal. This helped Portugal to take the case to the United Nations. Portugal kept fighting diplomatically in the United Nations for Portuguese India until 1974. Only in 1975, Dr. Mario Soares, representing a new Democratic Portugal, recognised the annexation of Goa, Damão and Diu and re-opened diplomatic relations with the Republic of India.

It is important to say that after 1975, the "Antigo Estado da India" (Goa, Damão, Diu e Dadrá e Nagar Avelí before 19 December 1961) was given somehow a special status under the Portuguese Nationality Law. Decreto-Lei n. 308-A/1975, 24th June - "Lei da Nacionalidade Portuguesa" – Article 1º. Clause (e), clearly says that all those born in the "Antigo Estado da India"(Goa, Damão, Diu e Dadrá e Nagar Avelí before 19 December 1961) who declare their intention to retain their Portuguese Nationality are entitled to do so. Other ex-Portuguese colonies’ citizens were given a period of time to decide if they wanted to remain as Portuguese citizens or if they wanted to adopt the nationality of the new independent countries (examples: Angola, Mozambique, etc). The citizens from Antigo Estado da India, on the other hand, were not given a period of time to decide if they wanted to continue being Portuguese citizens, which means that they are still entitled to declare they want to continue being Portuguese Citizens today.

Arombal (Harmal) Beach Goa

Arambol, on Goa's far northern stretch of coastline, at North Goa, 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Mapusa and 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Panaji. The closest railway station is Pernem.

Clean ,silent beach and  nightlife is relaxed,Just north of Arambol are the deserted Keri beach and Tiracol Fort. It's worth the walk there if you want total peace and privacy.

The place has two beaches, more popular is the main beach (Harmal beach), the northernmost beach in Goa.the main one is harmal and the second, more beautiful beach lies beyond the rocky hill and can only be reached on foot

The main beach, on a long stretch of curving sand is good for swimming. It is a place ideal for people looking for peace and silence. On its immediate north there are several attractive, relatively quite bays and fresh water pools also good for swimming separated by rocky headlands.

Best Beaches In Goa

There are number of beaches in goa one can visit, some people like crowded beaches some like silent ,but normally when you lend up in goa with time constrain or with lack of details or due to travel agency you might see only typical near by places like miramar, dauna paul, calangute, baga, anjuna, vagator and colva.any travell agent will take you to this beaches only as all this are nearby and they dont have to spend extra kilometers.but all this beaches are extremely crowded and you will be bit uncomfortable you have your family with you.

There are many beaches were you can spen your entire day or night with good food, drinks ,music and much  more only thing is this beaches are away from main city panjim or margoa or vasco. If you are planning your holiday then best is to stay at center of goa that is Panjim.Just take a glance at beach map Goa.Miramar,Dauna Paula is in Panjim ,if you plan to stay in panjim one day you can plan to go to south and other day you can go to north.Select your stay in center of Goa,ideally Panjim.

If you want best isolated ,clean, crowd  free ,best is morgim, mandrem, harmal  for this you need to travell for almost 1 to 2 hours trafic free :) clean road from panjim, only thing is that due to distance this travell agents will give you some false reason or when you select your tour package you need to be aware of this. Main reason they will not include this beaches is in a day you can just visit max two beaches, but mind you this is worth ,you will never feel like going back moment you arrive at this places.
